In A Medical Emergency: “What’s Your Plan?”

What happens if you get seriously ill or have an accident while traveling, or during your stay in Mexico? Most US Medicare, VA or Canadian Provincial medical insurance plans are not applicable in foreign countries, especially on extended stays away.

What if you have health insurance in Mexico, but in a medical emergency you want to be transported to a better medical facility in a different part of Mexico? The quality of health care in Mexico varies widely depending where you are when you have a medical emergency. Or, what if you want to be flown home for recovery?

In an emergency, if you want to get back home as soon as possible to be treated under your own health insurance plan in the USA, Canada or Mexico, then you need an affordable, reliable and flexible SkyMed Medical Evacuation Plan.

For Expats and Snowbirds spending time in Mexico, SkyMed outperforms all other plans! Many look-alike plans have serious restrictions hidden in their small print that effectively means that it is actually very difficult to qualify for a flight home to be treated.

With SkyMed, you are covered throughout Mexico, even in areas that are under a Level 4 Travel Restriction! Not so with other plans!

A private air ambulance evacuation from Mexico could cost you between $30,000 to $50,000 USD or more – cash up front! As a SkyMed member your medical evacuation flight would cost you NOTHING. The SkyMed Emergency Response Team makes all of the evacuation arrangements, helps you confirm the hospital bed in the hospital of your choice and “holds your hand” throughout your medical crisis until you safely arrive at the home hospital of your choice.

Types of Evacuations:

SkyMed offers three levels of evacuation, depending on the member’s emergency medical condition, but with SkyMed you always go to the HOME HOSPITAL OF YOUR CHOICE in the USA, Canada or Mexico.

  1. Air Ambulance: For members in critical condition who cannot fly commercially. Private air ambulance is fully-equipped and staffed by medical personnel.
  2. Commercial with Nurse Escort: For members who require the care and assistance of a professional nurse escort on their commercial flight home.
  3. Commercial: For members who are hospitalized and have been approved to fly home commercially. Also for members who are NOT hospitalized but who have received a serious medical diagnosis and need to return home for immediate further tests and/or treatment.

Geographic Areas of Coverage:

SkyMed’s Basic Service Areas include all of the USA, including Alaska and Hawaii, Canada, Caribbean, Bahamas, Cuba, Bermuda, and Mexico. You are covered in Mexico even in areas that are under a Level 4 Travel Restriction! Not so with other plans. Trips of up to 90 days outside of the Basic Service Area can also be protected under an optional Global Plan.

A key difference between SkyMed and other look-alike plans; if you suffer a serious accident or sudden onset illness, anywhere in the Basic Service Area, as a SkyMed member YOU are the one who decides if you want to be evacuated to the home hospital of your choice in the USA, Canada or Mexico…..even if the hospital initially treating you can adequately handle your condition! Most other plans do NOT offer evacuation by Member’s Choice and restrict transportation to situations that are deemed “medically necessary” and only to “nearest adequate hospital” which does NOT contractually bind them to get you to get you to your home hospital of choice, or even to your home country for treatment.
